Psychics, mediums and healers often mention the importance of shielding your energy. But as a psychic empath, I have learned the hard way that clearing and grounding your energy are equally important and should always be done first.

Shielding implies psychic defense. This is wonderful and necessary, but along with a strong shield you also need a strong anchor and healthy armor. The angels have shown me that in order for me to be most effective as an empathic psychic reader, it is critical that my energy be clear, grounded and shielded on a daily basis.

Early in my career as a professional psychic reader and angel practitioner, I made it a habit to shield my energy at the beginning of each workday. It served me very well at first. But, after a few weeks, I noticed that I still felt drained at times, even slightly irritable and frustrated. That is when I discovered the importance of clearing and grounding.

Being shielded without first clearing any residual negative energy is like not showering or bathing before putting on an expensive new evening gown, or letting garbage pile up in your house behind a fancy, high-tech security fence.

Similarly, shielding without being grounded leaves our energy and purpose untethered, unfocused, and easily blown off course. It’s like building a very strong, solid house on a sand dune without any foundation.

Incorporating the two energy hygiene practices of energy clearing and grounding into your daily spiritual routine allows for much stronger psychic protection of your empathic body, mind, and spirit. These basic practices form the foundation of the empath’s mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. It empowers you to navigate even the stormiest roads with inner peace, strength and confidence.

If you always clear and ground your energy before you shield, your mind will be clearer, your emotions more balanced, and your body much stronger. You’ll be better equipped to deal with chaos at work or at home. Decisions and appropriate actions will flow more easily. In essence, you will be more effectively connected to your natural intuition and inner guidance without confusion or uncertainty. And you will know which emotions, moods, and feelings are yours and which are someone else’s.

Energy Clearing

Empaths are highly sensitive to the thoughts, emotions, intentions and moods of others. It is a wonderful gift, allowing us to connect with others on a deep psychic level to offer support and compassion. It can also be challenging, however, because our psychic sensitivity makes us prone to picking up a lot of negative and even toxic energies from others. We also easily fall prey to energy thieves and psychic vampires. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, fatigue, emotionally overwhelmed, physically drained, demotivated, and even depressed.

Energy clearing involves the release of all of the accumulated emotional or energetic debris that empaths tend to absorb from their surroundings, interactions, and entanglements with others.

Energy clearing is an important part of self-care for empaths. Taking care of your energy can reduce stress, protect your well-being, and maintain your connection to your true self. It allows the empath to shed any lingering negativity or heaviness, restoring a sense of inner balance and calm.

Energy Grounding

Energy grounding, also known as earthing, is an important practice for empaths and highly sensitive people. Grounding serves as a protective, stabilizing mechanism that anchors you to the earth’s energy field and helps to channel and release unwanted extra energies that are not serving us. It fosters a deep connection with the Earth’s morphic field and draws upon its stabilizing energy to anchor you in the present moment.

Grounding is much like a “lightning rod” for empaths. In the same way that a lightning rod safely conducts intense electrical charges from the atmosphere to the ground, grounding helps empaths discharge and dissipate unwanted energies from their environment. It is a safety mechanism that ensures we remain grounded in the midst of the overwhelming energy we encounter in our daily lives.

Grounding is therefore an essential practice for empaths to remain rooted and stable amidst the tumultuous waves of external energies. By grounding regularly, the empath can maintain a sense of balance, resilience, and emotional well-being.

I make it a habit to clear and ground my energy every day. I’m a big proponent of massage, acupuncture, and Reiki, but it’s not practical for me to incorporate these practices on a daily basis. So I opt for meditation, prayer, crystal energy work, and cutting cord visualization, all of which are fabulous and easy techniques to incorporate into your daily metaphysical or spiritual practice.

I also like to augment these basic strategies with other techniques that are readily available and easily accessible. There are many ways to do effective energy clearing and grounding, and what works best for one person may not work for another. Some common methods include:


It all begins with the breath. Breathing is essential to feeling grounded and energized. Breathe! It sounds simple, and it is, but it is also very powerful. Deliberate, deep breaths ground us naturally. By quieting your mind and focusing on your breath, you can release pent-up tension and realign your energy. You can also imagine breathing out dark negativity and breathing in positive, healing light.

Invite your guides, angels, or ancestors into this breathing ritual to firmly ground your spiritual and emotional energy with your physical energy. Personally, I like to call upon the protective, empowering presence of Archangel Michael.

Practicing deep, mindful breathing helps to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a sense of calm and relaxation. It allows the empath to release any chaotic or negative energy they may have absorbed from others.


Meditation calms the mind and body and helps to release negative energy. There are many different types of meditation, so find one that works for you. The easiest way to start is to download or stream some guided meditations specifically designed for energy cleansing and grounding.


Using visualization techniques, such as imagining a bright light neutralizing negativity, can be a transformative method for clearing energy. Imagine negative energy leaving your body and being replaced with positive energy.

One of my favorite energy clearing techniques is to do a cord-cutting. Cord-cutting visualization is a cleansing and self-healing practice that uses visualized meditation or mental ritual to cut energetic cords that may be holding you back from emotional freedom and personal growth. Energetic cords are emotional bonds we form with people, places, or experiences, both positive and negative.

The idea behind cord-cutting is that these energetic cords can become tangled, knotted, or even toxic, draining our energy and preventing us from moving forward in life. By visualizing yourself cutting these cords, you free yourself from the negativity and reclaim your personal power.

To create your own cord-cutting visualization, use the following guidelines:

1. Find a quiet and comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to relax your body and mind.

2. Visualize yourself in a safe and secure space, such as a peaceful meadow or a deep, flowing river. This represents the inner sanctuary where you can heal and transform.

3. Call upon a source of support and protection, such as a spirit guide, an angel, your ancestors, or the Divine. Ask for Spirit’s assistance and protection in this energy release process.

4. When you are ready, think of the person, situation, or belief you wish to release. Feel the emotions and energy associated with this string.

5. Visualize the cord as a thick, tangled thread radiating with dark, shadowy energies. This represents the negative aspects of the connection.

6. Reach out with your mind’s eye and grasp the cord firmly. Feel its rough texture and the weight of the negativity it carries.

7. With a clear and determined intention, visualize yourself cutting the cord with a pair of shimmering silver scissors or a powerful beam of light. Watch as the scissors or light cut through the knotted threads, severing the connection.

8. As the cord breaks, feel a wave of lightness and clarity wash over you. Notice the negative energies dissolve into the ether.

9. Visualize the severed cord transforming into a shimmering ribbon of pure white light. This represents the release of negative energies and the infusion of positive vibrations.

10. With gratitude, release the severed cord into the vastness of the universe, knowing that it has served its purpose and no longer holds any power over you.

11. Feel the radiant light of healing and transformation surrounding you. Your energy field is now clear and balanced. Visualize yourself filled with pure, positive energy, ready to move forward with greater clarity and empowerment.

12. Take a few more deep breaths and slowly open your eyes. Bring the feeling of peace, freedom and power into your daily life.

Remember, the cord-cutting visualization is a personal journey, and you may need to repeat the process several times to release any negative attachments that are holding you back. Be patient and compassionate with yourself, and trust that your inner healing power is working to transform your life.


Crystals can be used to cleanse and ground your energy field. Some common crystals for empaths are clear quartz, amethyst and rose quartz, and black tourmaline, which are known for their grounding and protective properties. You can meditate while holding the crystal or carry it with you throughout the day. You can also set up a crystal energy protection grid in your work or living space.

Essential Oils

Essential oils can be inhaled or applied to the skin to help clear and balance your energy. Essential oils affect our mind and emotions. Our sense of smell is estimated to be 10,000 times more acute than our other senses and is sensitive to approximately 10,000 chemical compounds. Once registered, scent travels to the brain faster than sight or sound. The effect is rapid, profound and healing. I have find essential oils to be very powerful in my own self-care routine.

Essential oils can be diffused or added to carrier oils such as sweet almond, jojoba or coconut oil before being added to your bath. Some of the cleansing oils I like to use are ylang ylang, geranium, sandalwood, cedarwood, lavender, copaiba, frankincense, lemon, patchouli, sage, rose, myrrh and peppermint.

Some of my favorite grounding oils are spruce, rosewood, white fur, pine, angelica, cedar, vetiver, cinnamon, bergamot, jasmine, spikenard, and neroli.

When I am pressed for time, I simply inhale the vapors of one of these oils lightly directly from the bottle or put some on a cotton ball or handkerchief for easy access throughout the day.

Other air-based energy cleansing practices, such as smudging yourself and your home with sage or burning incense, can also help remove toxic energy from your aura and living environment.


Since we shower or bathe daily, water is my first and favorite energy clearing agent, along with essential oils. As you wash off the dirt of the day and watch it go down the drain, so too is the effect of water on your energetic body by setting the intention.

Another favorite cleanser for me is Himalayan salt. The benefits are many, not the least of which is that it is detoxifying, relaxing and balancing. Salt baths can dry out the skin, so this is only a weekly treat for me.

Fill your bath with warm water, the level is up to you. Don’t make it too hot. Next, add two to three handfuls of Himalayan salt and a few drops of one of the essential oils from the list above. I highly recommend lavender. It’s my go-to oil for everything, and it’s gentle on the skin.

For the bath to be really effective, you need to soak for at least 20 minutes. If you have a diffuser, you can diffuse some of the other essential oils listed above. Music is also a wonderful addition to this practice.

Barefoot Earthing

Walking barefoot on the earth, also known as “earthing,” is a simple yet powerful technique that offers numerous benefits for empathic well-being. In my opinion, it is the best and most effective grounding technique. However, it is not always practical for all empaths as a daily practice, as it is best done outdoors or in nature.

Barefoot grounding involves connecting your bare feet directly to the surface of the earth and allowing the earth’s natural energy to flow into your body by simply walking barefoot on grass, sand, or dirt to ground and rebalance your energy field.

Here is a step-by-step guide to barefoot grounding:

Choose a suitable environment: Find a safe and natural environment such as a park, garden, or even your own backyard with bare earth or grass. Avoid walking barefoot on pavement, concrete, or other surfaces that are not connected to the earth’s energy. Take off your shoes and socks to allow direct contact between your bare feet and the earth.

Connect with nature: Engage your senses by appreciating the sights, sounds, and smells of your surroundings. This will further deepen your connection with nature and enhance your grounding experience.

Feel the energy of the earth: Pay attention to the sensations in your feet as they touch the ground. Feel the texture of the surface, the temperature, and the subtle energy emanating from the earth.

Focus on your breathing: Maintain a relaxed and mindful state of mind by focusing on your natural breathing pattern. Deep, slow breaths help to enhance the grounding experience.

Visualization: Imagine roots growing from your feet and extending deep into the earth, anchoring you to its energy. Feel the connection between you and the grounding energy of the earth. Notice any negative or unwanted emotions or thoughts that arise. Visualize them leaving your body through your feet and dissolving into the earth.

Gratitude: Remember to express gratitude for the support of the earth and the healing energy you are receiving. The grounding power of gratitude is rarely recognized in modern metaphysics and spirituality.

Aim to spend at least 20 to 30 minutes barefoot on the earth for optimal grounding benefits. You can also ground for shorter periods throughout the day. For best results, aim to ground with bare feet at least 3 to 4 times a week for 20 to 30 minutes each session.

Grounding Visualization

The best alternative to barefoot grounding is to do a visualized meditation. It is especially your best option if you are unable to do your grounding work outdoors or in nature. Here’s a step-by-step guide to doing an energy grounding visualization:

Find a comfortable place: Find a quiet and comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed for a few minutes. You can sit or lie down, whatever feels best to you.

Connect with your breath: Take a few deep, slow breaths, noticing the rise and fall of your chest and abdomen. This will help calm your mind and body.

Focus on Your Feet: Focus your attention on your feet and feel them pressing against the ground. Imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet and reaching deep into the earth. Feel the connection between your feet and the energy of the earth.

Visualize the flow of energy: Imagine a stream of golden or emerald energy flowing from the earth up through your roots and into your body. Feel this energy filling your body with vitality and grounding you. Now imagine any negative or unwanted energy leaving your body through your feet and roots, sinking into the earth and being transformed into pure light. Feel the lightness and well-being that comes from releasing this energy.

Grounding Affirmations: Repeat to yourself grounding affirmations such as “I am grounded and stable,” “I am connected to the Earth’s energy,” and “I am safely and powerfully anchored.

Continue to feel the connection to the Earth’s energy for as long as you feel comfortable. When you’re ready, slowly bring your awareness back to your surroundings. Open your eyes and carry this sense of grounding and balance with you throughout the day.


Imagine that you are standing barefoot in a lush green field. Feel the warm earth under your feet. Now imagine an energy field spreading out from your feet, anchoring you deeply in the earth. . See the roots sinking deeper and deeper into the earth, forming a powerful bond with the earth, like an ancient, indestructible tree.

The roots carry all the negative energy that needs to be released. As this energy flows downward, visualize it dissolving into the earth, leaving you feeling lighter, calmer and more balanced.

Next, visualize light energy flowing up from the earth through the roots and into your body. This energy is cleansing, nourishing and empowering, filling you with a sense of stability, confidence and well-being.

Lifestyle Strategies

Your daily lifestyle choices and habits contribute greatly to your overall energetic health and well-being.

Grounding your energy starts with your body. Eating well should go without saying, but many empaths, psychics, mediums and energy healers tend to neglect themselves and either overeat or forget to eat.
Food is the fuel of the body. Making small changes, such as not overindulging in caffeine and alcohol and not smoking, makes a huge difference in being able to ground your body strongly. A healthy diet also helps to boost your immune system and mood, and gives you more energy.

Getting enough sleep, rest and relaxation is essential for your physical, mental and emotional well-being, and it helps to strengthen you against negative energy.

Spending more time in nature helps to clear your energy and can be very grounding for empaths. Spend time outdoors, surrounded by trees, plants and natural elements, and allow the energy of the earth to permeate your being.
Walking barefoot on grass or dirt, standing or sitting under a tree, or immersing yourself in natural bodies of water can help release excess energy and restore balance. Or simply sit by a flowing stream or river and allow the sound and movement of the water to wash away any negative energies.

Limit your exposure to negative energy as much as possible in your daily life. Be careful with whom you spend time with. It is important to be aware of what drains you and to avoid people and situations that are likely to leave you feeling drained. It is also important to set clear boundaries with others, especially if you feel overwhelmed by their energy.

Remember that cleansing and grounding are ongoing practices, and consistency is key. Incorporate some of these techniques into your daily routine or whenever you feel the need to restore your balance and well-being as an empath. Cleansing and grounding routines or rituals do not have to be lengthy, but they do have to be consistent. You wouldn’t leave your house half dressed, so don’t leave your house without first grounding yourself for the day.

Finally, once you have cleared and grounded your energy, you can do whatever shielding ritual, meditation, prayer, or visualization you normally do when you do your energy shielding.

Because of our innate ability to absorb and internalize the emotions and energies of others, clearing and grounding are essential tools for empath self-care and energy preservation. Without these practices, empaths risk becoming overwhelmed and burdened by the constant influx of external influences, leading to emotional exhaustion and a sense of disconnection from our own authentic selves.

Clearing and grounding help to strengthen your emotional boundaries and foster a sense of stability that allows you to navigate your empathic gifts with clarity, confidence, and resilience. By embracing these foundational practices as an empath, you can thrive using your empathic abilities as a source of strength and insight, rather than succumbing to the heaviness and unwanted demands of external energies.
